October 2018
Hello 1st Grade Families,

Happy Fall!! I can't believe it's October already.  Time sure flies!!

Anyway, I will try to update this web page each month to let you know what we have going on in our classroom.

In Reader's Workshop, we are in the middle of Unit 1 which focuses on building good reading habits.  In school the children have partners for buddy reading and are working on building their independent reading stamina.  The children are up to 10 minutes of uninterrupted reading time each day. Please encourage your child to read for 15 minutes each day and visit RAZ kids as often as possible.  Keep filling up those reading logs!

In Writer's Workshop, we are writing small moment stories.  The children are writing stories about themselves and their lives.  Please encourage your child to use experiences from home and a small seed notebook where children can jot down ideas so that they remember specific events is also another great way to get them writing more!

In Math, we are beginning Unit 2 and students are learning new strategies to practice their addition facts.  To increase fluency with facts please encourage your child to visit Reflex Math regularly! Certificates will be given out as awards for meeting milestones!

In Social Studies, students have learned about Citizenship, Respect, community helpers, services,/goods, needs/wants and will learn a bit about democracy and our country in the upcoming week.  We will begin our Science rotation on October 22nd and I'll keep you posted on our upcoming lessons.

Thank you for all of your continued support and dedication! We are loving all of the pictures from the "Fun Calendar" activities so please keep them coming!! Enjoy the cooler weather and the fall festivities!

Best,
Ms. Moreno
