About Third Grade...

Welcome to third grade! Third-grade students will step into a warm and welcoming environment where a sense of community and belonging is cultivated among all students. During the first week of school, we will read aloud the book "Our Class is a Family," which helps ensure that every child feels valued and respected by encouraging open communication amongst peers. We continually create a safe space where kindness, empathy, and positivity are highlighted. Each student's academic and personal growth will be supported throughout the school year.

Reading: Building a Reading Life

In our first unit of study, students will become familiar with the routines of the reading workshop, and learn how to build stamina and independence to grow ideas within their independent reading books. We also complete a novel study on Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo, where students are immersed in learning new reading strategies that will help them further comprehend books at their independent level.

Writing: Launching the Writing Workshop

Students will be introduced to the writing workshop routines and use writers' notebooks as tools for collecting seed stories. They will learn how the writing process helps them become better writers and how writers follow the steps of the writing process. We will work on writing a personal narrative, including writing “big beginnings” and “show, not tell” details.

Mathematics: Math Tools, Time, and Multiplication

In the beginning of the school year, an active, hands-on, and collaborative learning environment is established during our math period. Children will receive a math toolkit, which includes a variety of math tools to solve problems, tell time, and measure. The beginning of the school year lays the foundation for developing multiplication and division strategies, which is a crucial third-grade math skill. In addition, students are introduced to NJSLA style open-ended responses, which require multiple steps as well as thorough explanations.

Science: Physical Science

Our first rotation of science focuses on Physical Science through the application of learned skills in hands-on activities and experiments. In this unit, students explore the forces all around them. They investigate the effects of pushes and pulls as well as balanced and unbalanced forces. Students will also consider the effects of various variables on the motion of objects. Additionally, students also explore the power of magnetic forces and investigate firsthand how these forces can be used to help us in our everyday lives. Students get to explore force through Mystery Science activities including their own creation of a paper “frog,” a tug-of-war simulation, as well as a magnet scavenger hunt.

Social Studies: World Geography

Our first rotation of Social Studies introduces students to world geography, North America, and the United States. Students will study the world's continents and oceans, delve deeper into North America, and analyze the geography of the U.S.A., along with regions of our country. In addition, students will identify symbols and landmarks of our nation, be introduced to the U.S. government, and explore American culture. Lastly, students will focus on where they live in the world, including writing their home address. As a culminating activity, students will mail a handwritten letter to a classmate after achieving the mastery of addressing an envelope.
