About Second Grade...
We all soared into Second Grade! The children are excited to be here and are adjusting to our classroom routines and expectations. We are learning to be more responsible by keeping our desks organized, and recording and turning in our homework on a daily basis. We continue to appreciate our classroom as a community of learners.
In Social Studies, we are learning about what it means to be a good citizen and we have been sharing what our responsibilities are at school and at home. It turns out that second graders are responsible for so many things like homework, taking care of pets, and helping with the dishes - just to name a few! We are exploring landmarks and United States symbols.
We have been busy delving into interesting stories during our Reading Workshop. We have been working on building our reading muscles by increasing our stamina, developing good reading habits, and picking just right books.
In Phonics we have been reviewing and practicing many of the spelling patterns that we learned in first grade. We will be moving into new concepts such as open syllables, and multisyllabic words.
We are working on crafting personal narratives in Writing. We are enjoying creating stories about our fun memories and adventures we have been on. We are learning how to add detail by showing not telling and including dialogue into our stories.
In Mathematics, we are developing our understanding of the number grid, addition and subtraction, number stories, and strengthening our fact power. Please help us by reinforcing these important concepts at home. Be sure to practice using the Reflex Math website. The children all have passwords and enjoy practicing until they hit the green light!
In Science we will soon begin to explore matter. We will determine that everything we see, feel, touch or taste is a solid, liquid, or a gas. We are looking forward to many hands on experiments to explore matter and how it changes.
